Kayotsarg means, "abandoning the body" - Acharya Mahapragya

All humans have strong attachments to material things, and in fact, to their body. Strong attachments are a significant obstacle in practicing meditation. Attachments can make it difficult to take even the first step of meditation, called Kayotsarg. Kayotsarg means, "abandoning the body".

There is a technique very similar to kayotsarg in Hindu tradition of Hathyoga called shavaasan. There are simi|arities and differences between Hathyoga’s shavaasan and Jain tradition’s kayotsarg. Therefore, readers who have heard about shavaasan should not assume that kayotsarg and shavaasan are the same. In shavaasan one concentrates on relaxing the body, whereas in kayotsarg one not only makes the body relaxed but goes beyond the body to experience the separateness of body and soul and detachment from the body (mamatva visarjan).

This is a profound realization of seeing the soul as different from the body, and is known by a technical term in Jain philosophy called bhed-vigyaan (Le. the science of differentiation between the soul and the body). To completely achieve the state of kayotsarg it is essential to use bhed vigyaan, the science of differentiation.
